«Entusiasme og kritisk bevissthet, mer trenger vi ikke!» Rosa Luxemburg og Hannah Arendt skydde ikke konflikter i kampen for å forandre verden og gjøre samfunnet til et mer solidarisk sted. Arendts og Luxemburgs kritikk av forbrukersamfunnet og manglende politisk deltakelse kunne ikke vært mer aktuell. De var begge overbevist om at grunnleggende forandringer både er mulige og nødvendige. Den nederlandske filosofen Joke J. Hermsen viser at disse to ikonene aldri mistet sin kjærlighet til verden. Joke J. Hermsen, født 1961 i Middenmeer, Nederland, studerte litteratur og filosofi i Paris og bor nå i Amsterdam. Hun har utgitt en rekke essaysamlinger om samtidsfilosofi, moderne kunst og litteratur, og skriver også romaner. Hun har mottatt en rekke priser for romanene og essayene. Bøkene hennes er oversatt til mange språk.

Da Naomi Klein oppdaget at en kvinne som delte fornavn med henne, men hadde radikalt annerledes synspunkter, ble stadig forvekslet med henne, virket det for latterlig til å ta seriøst. Så var det plutselig ikke det. Hun begynte å kjempe med en forvrengt virkelighetsfølelse, og ble besatt av å lese truslene på sosiale medier, de endeløst rullende fornærmelsene fra tilhengerne til dobbeltgjengeren hennes. Hvorfor hadde hennes skyggefulle andre gått en så ekstrem vei? Hvorfor var identiteten – alt vi har i møte med verden – blitt så ustabil?

I andre halvdel av 1800-tallet utkom det - i tillegg til dagsavisene - en rekke ukentlige nyhetsmagasiner, hvorav de mest kjente er Skilling-Magazin, Ny illustrert Tidende, Illustreret Nyhedsblad og Folkebladet. Felles for dem alle var at de inneholdt forbløffende gode illustrasjoner, basert på xylografier eller trestikk.

Illustrasjonene var dessuten forsynt med interessante tekster, og sammen gir disse oss et unikt tidsbilde av en hovedstad med enorme klasseskiller. Noen spradet på Karl Johan, mens andre vasset i leire i bydelen New York på Grünerløkken. Leserne får bli med både til slummen i Vika («med byens verste utskudd av begge kjønn»), til Østkanten (der «byens urolige elementer var samlet») og Botsfengselet (hvor bare mønsterfangene fikk spise seg mette) - men også til Homansbyen (ikke for folk som drev med utskjenking og håndverk), Frognerkilen (der borgerskapets landsteder var truet av den nye jernbanen til Drammen) og det nye Bygdø Søbad («et funn for den velhavende Kristiania-mann»).

På denne tiden fikk byen også flere av sine mest kjente monumentale bygninger, deriblant Slottet (som lenge bare ble kalt «kongeboligen»), Storthinget («et ikke noget synderlig monumentalt bygg») og den nye Østbanebygningen («fullt europeisk både med hensyn til størrelse og skjønnhet». Og det ble spådd at «kaldt øl og god musikk vil gjøre St.Hanshaugen populær».

Containing 97 unique images made from the same photographic negative, the artist’s book Old Tjikko by Danish visual artist Nicolai Howalt is like no other. Questioning the constancy of the photographic image and pointing to the subtle and often overlooked effects of its materiality on our perception, it is as if these imperfections of ageing in the papers reveal glimpses of a distant and different time. Dormant traces brought forth into the present by Howalt and the frozen millisecond of a recently captured photographic negative depicting a tree, which in itself stands as a living image of an almost incomprehensible timeline – the passing of millennia.

Mycologist Henning Knudsen, philosopher Søren Gosvig Olesen and art historian Lars Kiel Bertelsen contributes to the publication with three essays placing the work in the context of natural sciences and biology, the philosophy of perception and the history of photography.
